Past President C. Lee Smith led the club in a trial of something new for us – the Networking Rotary. The group divided into odds and evens and rotated tables for mini-networking sessions. The goal was to help our members get to know each other from a business perspective and develop new relationships. The trial was well received with the only complaint being it didn’t last long enough. The Networking Rotary may become a regular fixture on our meeting schedule.

President Deb Sturm reminded everyone about our club’s project to help set up and tear down for the Orange Festival Parade on July 4th. Children and pets are welcome. A photo gallery from last year’s parade is available in our Members Area.

Bart Mahoney spoke of the benefits of Rotary International Foundation at Friday’s meeting. The Assistant District Governor from the Whitehall-Bexley club said his life changed forever after attending a RI Convention in Australia and seeing all the good Rotary does in far-off places in the world. A multi-Paul Harris Fellow, Mahoney said a mere $1,000 donation can prevent children in Africa from getting Malaria by providing them with mosquito nets for their beds – which cost $2 each. This is in addition to Rotary’s efforts to finish the job of eradicating Polio, providing clean water and other projects that help the disadvantaged.

Past President C. Lee Smith became our club’s second Paul Harris Fellow by writing a $1,000 check on the spot following Bart’s presentation. The contribution will be matched by District Governor Nominee Ram Gawande (Athens club) as part of Operation Break Ram, which ends June 30.

P.S. Ducks wearing red sneakers… nice tie Bart!

The couple, who met in China, culminated a three-year adoption process with a several week trip to visit relatives and pick up their new bundle of joy! Larry also advocated the Half the Sky Foundation – a volunteer organization that helps find families for orphaned children from China.

Following the meeting, the Board approved the transfer of membership for Bob Johnson into our club, plus the approval of the Duckwitzs as new member invitations.

A rare occurrence at Friday’s meeting – no guest speaker. So President Deb got out a stopwatch and challenged everyone in attendance to tell about themselves in 45 seconds or less. Among the interesting nicknames that were exposed: Looo, Duck and Little Ricky… and by the way, where is Thunder?!?

We also learned that half of us were ‘born in a small town,’ the other half from somewhere around Cleveland, and that a River Rat is NOT a cat that needs to be saved.

This week’s Rotary trivia: what number member in Rotary was the first to introduce singing. The answer from the crowd: ‘the first and LAST.’ The real answer: the fifth.

Deb and Past President Lee recapped the District Conference. Ric Visintine previewed a new community service project our club will be doing in August. We’ll post more details as things are firmed up.

Our Next Meeting is Friday, May 25. Kaiyu Clark (the softer, gentler – but no less caring – version of Bill Rogers) and her husband will tell of the adventures of adopting their daughter from China earlier this year.
